The legal bits...
Celebrant-Led Weddings & the Legal Bits (UK)
Many couples in the UK are drawn to celebrant-led weddings because they want a ceremony that actually feels like them. A celebrant-led ceremony gives you complete freedom to tell your story, choose your words, include meaningful moments, and create a ceremony that reflects your values, without being restricted by religious or civil scripts.
It’s important, though, to understand how the legal side of marriage works in the UK so there are no surprises along the way.
What Does a Wedding Celebrant Do?
A wedding celebrant creates and delivers a fully bespoke ceremony, designed around you as a couple. There are no set readings, vows, or structures, everything is written with you and for you.
At present, independent wedding celebrants in the UK are not legally permitted to solemnise marriages. This means that while your celebrant leads your wedding ceremony, the legal formalities need to be completed separately.
How Do You Make It Legal?
To be legally married in the UK, there are a few simple requirements:
Giving Notice
Both partners must give notice of intention to marry at their local register office. This must be done at least 29 days before the date of your legal marriage and can be done up to 12 months in advance. You’ll be asked for identification and proof of address at this appointment.
The Legal Ceremony Location
Your legal marriage must take place in a register office or at a venue licensed for civil marriages. Only approved venues can host legally binding ceremonies.
Who Conducts the Legal Ceremony
A legal marriage must be conducted by a registrar or an authorised religious officiant in a registered place of worship.
Witnesses
Two witnesses must be present at the legal ceremony to sign the marriage schedule or register.
How Many Couples Do This
Many couples choose to separate the legal and celebrant ceremonies. Some complete the legal paperwork quietly at a registry office on a different day, then have their celebrant-led ceremony exactly how they want it , with no time pressure, no restrictions, and all the meaningful bits included.
Others choose to do both on the same day, with a legal ceremony earlier and their celebrant-led ceremony as the main event. There’s no right or wrong way, just whatever works best for you.
